Technically Plex is a paid closed source but self hosted thingy. I think the line is a bit blurry on this since I wouldn’t mind people posting about Plex even though I use Jellyfin. However, advertising it would be a nono.

Since there’s no lack of solutions here I’m going to add one more. If you manage to create bash to update the containers then you can have it run with a systemd service that’s easy to set up. It’s very easy to set up and it’ll work the same as running the command no your computer.

Maybe even put it in a couple of places in the CONTRIBUTING.md and even a “important reread this again right before submitting” to really shove it in there and prompt inject them.

Open source has a problem that a bunch of dumb bots are submitting PRs, we can use the fact that they’re dumb to remove them.

I’d recommend starting by hosting a nextcloud instance.

1. Get a desktop computer, pretty much anything will do but having room to add more HDD is important.
2. Install Linux distro like Ubuntu or something
3. Get a static IP so your IP doesn’t change
4. Setup a router port forwarding rule so that an outside address points to your nextcloud instance.

Then do some optional steps:

• Automatically turn on PC when power comes back on (BIOS setting)
• Startup script that runs nextcloud on startup
• Install docker to manage services like nextcloud
• Add some remote desktop thingy to manage your server from your laptop (ssh is also good but a steeper learning curve)
• Get a NAS for storing data with redundancy.
• Have some other form of backup like your current Google account, cloud provider or one of your mates with a similar setup.

That’s pretty much what you need to start hosting your own files, then later on you can setup a email server, media server like Jellyfin, homepage and everything.

Just go one step at a time and when you hit an issue you can and should ask Google or ChatGPT. Remember, everything exposed to the Internet is vulnerable so take security seriously. Always have everything protected by a decently long password, pairing requirement with your server confirming adding a device or an API key.

The national government pays for storage and bandwidth and so on, financed by pay-per-view. Harmful and illegal material will most likely not make the cut but most old movies, old cartoon shows, old talk shows and interviews and so on will be available to the public.

This is both for entertainment and research, optionally they can make a library card add-on to have it as a subscription.

Current services are all in their own corner and often don’t have old content such as dubbed cartoons from people’s childhood.

Piracy is also limited, finding rugrats in a Scandinavian language is pretty much impossible.

Don’t forget industrial heat. If we had infinite electricity for free everywhere there would still be fossil fuels burned for industrial heat. We need more technology to finish it like plasma torches.

No need to despair, the technology is being actively developed and a lot of the sub 600 Celsius temps have an electric solution now.
