Saw this posted on a discord group that I’m in and thought it was a joke at first but when I clicked the link to Reddit, was very shocked to discover that people are actually truly discussing this kind of thing seriously. Like, it’s not just a joke, they are actually upset and even triggered about this sort of thing. I mean I guess when you spend $20 to $5,000 on a digital waifu, she can’t possibly be flat chested, rightttt?! /s

Is this like a normal thing for this game?

I think you are taking that post the wrong way. For context every character in Star Rail falls into 3 (iirc) categories: short, medium, or tall, and every character within a category has the exact same body type, just with different accessories and textures. What that post is saying is that this is a character is in a category (medium/maiden) that does not have the exact same body as other characters in the same category, which might mean that in the future the characters will have more diverse models/body types.

That’s not to say that some people don’t get unduly angry over how their characters look, but that’s not what is happening here.

    What’s the problem here?

    It’s just a png

Blame the cancerous gambling the game has, not what you like or don’t like about a pngs looks

Its unfortunately a pretty common thing, especially for gatcha games. Look at the whole Limbus Company debacle from a few years back, for example, where people protested outside the studio because the summer skins weren’t sexy enough (for a game that hadn’t previously sexualized characters heavily) and got an unrelated artist fired because she was a feminist and thus was surely the one who made the decision.

With gatcha games, its a bit of a perfect storm with the extreme investment expected in these games, the monetization of characters, an industry that leans into this, and the fact that these games tend to be made in and marketed towards east-Asian regions where generally, sexuality is more accepted but sexism also more common and played largely by young, immature men.

Edit: Notably also, a lot of the men getting super invested in games like this are also vulnerable, which means a lot are likely to also end up in groups like the incel “movement” as well as being more likely to be swept up in any existing toxic culture around the games themselves.
