  • There are some things that crows can do that we can’t that require brainpower. They’re not included in our definition of intelligence, but that’s only because we base that off of what we are capable of.

When we talk about athleticism, we rarely talk about neck rotation, but if we wanted an unbiased comparison with an owl, we’d probably have to start.

Similarly, we’d likely need to start assessing the ability to differentiate, recognize, and remember individuals of different species based on seeing their faces once, if we wanted to be at all fair to crows. They can do that to us pretty consistently, and we are capable of very little in that area. I’ve spent many hours looking at my beloved cat, but if another black, green eyed cat of the same size and with the same level of snout snuck in through my window, I’d need to count toes or rely on sound/behavior cues to tell them apart (though I feel weirdly guilty admitting that).

I think we’re probably smarter than crows are (and definitely, if we use the current definition of “smart”), but I also think they’re probably better suited to the core skill that drives our intelligence, pattern recognition. I suspect that they’d also be better than llms are now, if we could figure out a proper interface for them, but I don’t think they’d enjoy that very much.

  • I don’t disagree with any of that, except that it’s way easier to break a hip (especially if you’re a woman who’s given birth in the previous few years) than most people realize. We’re generally really good at walking when we’re younger, so it’s not as common to fall (especially not without catching yourself and minimizing the damage), but a fall onto ice or stone at the wrong angle could damage a lot of 30 and 40 year olds’ pelvises.

I was very stupid and playing Pokémon go while drunk on a wet, mossy cobblestone road at 29, and I fell and broke my arm and eye socket. I lift weights and am generally strong and healthy, but it was just a bad angle. It took drunkenness, distraction, and a slippery and uneven surface to get me to fall without catching myself, but once I did, it’s not hard to do damage.

Edit: I will grant you: drunk Pokémon players do not show the level of judgment that I want from elected officials, but walking to work on an icy sidewalk if it’s your only transportation option is not an error of judgment and it’s more dangerous than people realize.

The German word for turkey is Pute (or Truthahn, there’s almost always a synonym for basically anything, but that’s used slightly less with cold cuts and more with the bird itself) and I work somewhere where I have to ask whether something is with ham or turkey like 20x a day. Every time, but especially when speaking to a Spanish speaker, I worry that I’m going to mispronounce it.

I can switch to Putenbrust, but that doesn’t help my brain from shouting “slut tit” at me every time I say it.
