It’s my wife’s first full day back at work after maternity leave - we had planned for her to WFH until Thursday but our backup battery installation for our solar array got moved up to today. They have to periodically cut our electricity to get everything wired up, so no WFH until they’re done tomorrow or Wednesday. So today is also my first full day as the stay-at-home dad, which has been pretty good. Lots of picture taking to share so she doesn’t feel like she’s missing too much being at work.

We took a trip over to our local library this morning and signed up for the “1000 books before kindergarten” challenge and showed off our outfit for dinovember to the librarians (pictured below). I was at the library board meeting last week to weigh in on who should be our new permanent library director, and there were a bunch of us there to support the acting director’s bid. There might be a board position opening up in the near future and I’ve been encouraged by some folks to apply/run for the position.

We also finally found a food our old cat is willing and able to eat reliably, after much trial and error, which has taken a weight off our hearts.

This is an incredibly good point - blueberries often have a hard time rooting without a number of fundamental factors in place. Soil type, how a particular site drains or holds water, whether a host of other organisms are able to support the sometimes tenuous grasp they have to the space; even how acidic or basic a particular plot is will heavily influence how well they can do, let alone whether they’ll thrive there. Finding anywhere else that’s suitable is a monumental task, and daunting.

It’s my belief that everyone who can be a steward should be looking to blunt as much of the disturbance as they can for the blueberries that aren’t able to be uprooted, like a thick protective mulch to prevent the damage that can drive too deeply into the soil, while also keeping those new spaces they find in mind for the ones that can be safely relocated. Preferably in a way that inoculates the soil to provide a resurgence of them, and makes the whole area more conducive to the beauty and nourishment that they provide. It’s that mindset of interconnectedness, with blueberries, that allows for a path for understanding how best to approach the task at hand. It would be impossible to do without respecting the needs of the blueberries in question.

Something I like to do is to take their call scripts and mail them as signed letters. Phone calls can be useful, sure (when they’re answered or the answering machine isn’t full or disabled), but my understanding is that written letters are taken more seriously in those offices. The order of significance, as it was explained to me, goes email -> phone call -> letter.

Despite almost two months of not gaining weight despite feeding on demand, our daughter is finally up to the 41st percentile for weight gain by age and is hitting her developmental milestones. Trying to focus on those positives instead of all the negative emotions I’m harboring right now. Trying to remember that she’s a tiny little vibe-o-meter and that my primary focus has to be her well-being in spite of everything else that’s going on.

First and foremost, thank you all for being a part of this wonderful place. You’re all part of my extended chosen family - family that doesn’t always see eye to eye on everything but knows that we’ll have each other’s backs instead of putting them to the wall.

Secondly, step away from the chats and the doom to do something positive for yourself in your space, or do something to re-orient yourself. Despair and gloom blunt your efficacy communicating and organizing, and mutual care and aid like we have here on Beehaw are going to be more important than ever.

We have lemon thyme as well as your standard garden variety (hah!) thyme. They split readily to make new clonal cuttings, and I’ve rarely had one fail regardless of the timing of the division. We dry it for use in teas or for cooking, and it makes a good ground cover partner for plants like strawberries. The small flowers help to support solitary bees as well as parasitoid wasps, which help to regulate the insect pressure on the thyme’s plant neighbors.

Planting Justice is a permaculture nursery in Oakland, CA,. Here is a video from Andrew Millison’s channel highlighting the work they do. Besides being jealous of all those heat-loving plants I can’t grow, their efforts towards reparative justice and providing inspiring work and living wages, especially to former inmates, is truly inspiring.
