Today’s game is Zomboid. I’m finding it hard to let go of Dead Money (fully intended). Me and my friend continued the story of Cable and Jerry tonight instead.

We camped out in this house we found, made some steak, and I went searching for a car. I was jumped by maybe 10 zombies outside a police station and managed to find the key and get in and loot it. So we’re set on guns for now. I also found a Ranger Truck to drive, but on my way back my friend got bit. I had to put him down and he respawned.

I walked to the other side of town because the truck was low on gas and we bumped into each other when I was searching for a car to pick him up in. We went on a brief walk through town trying to find a gas can to siphon gas. We didn’t find one but we did find a Van with a key in it (had to break the window to get at it though) and a Van with a full tank. I used bottles to Siphon gas out if the one with a tank and we started the car and drove home from that little adventure.

(Bonus pic of me standing over My Friend/Jerry’s Son Cable’s Corpse after putting him down (he put his clothes away so he would be able to find them after respawning))

Dunno if it’s MP compatible yet, but the newly released Day One mod attempts to simulate the first day of the Knox Event. Tons of NPCs (using a new engine instead of the built in AI), bombs dropping, different factions, etc. Crazy experience thus far, and you’ll probably die faster if you’re not careful.

Still can’t wait for build 42 tho.

You can siphon gas with an empty bottle too, you no longer “need” a gas can. It holds a lot less gas, but would work in a pinch.

That’s what we ended up doing. We siphoned gas 5% at a time into two bottles and transferred it into the other van

You make this game sound so fun.

Now that he has died and respawned, is he still Jerry’s son Cable? Or is it a new character now?

My friend decided that we pulled a Comic Maneuver and this new Cable is a cable from an alternative universe that is taking the place of the old cable that died (despite in our cannon it’s been proven that Cable is capable of respawning. Just for whatever reason this time cable decided he didn’t want to). So he’s still cable, just a different cable

If you’re enjoying Project Zomboid, you might want to check out Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (CDDA). It’s a fantastic open-world survival game with a similar vibe, but it offers a lot more depth and complexity in its gameplay mechanics. Best part? CDDA is free and open-source.

Doesn’t Zomboid have a game mode that’s a reference to CDDA? I didn’t know it was free though. I’ll have to download it and give it a try

Zomboid was originally inspired by CDDA. Much of the game flow and ideas are 1 to 1 copies. The biggest difference is that CDDA is a turn based game that is played on tiles (think rogue or nethack). From the inventory system to crafting to base construction to reading books, it’s all there.

Oh. Except bites aren’t instant death. There’s no zombie virus. Dead bodies rise up (including yours!). You can still get infections and die from them, but you can also just clean your wounds. 1v1-ing a zombie is suicide though unless you have a decent weapon.

Also, zombies evolve… So they scale well into the late game. Having a zombie hulk throw you through a concrete wall and breaking every bone in your body is usually lethal.

Some day I need to actually give this a go beyond what I played originally. I haven’t played this since the alpha days forever ago, and it looked like it had a lot of potential, but I didn’t have the patience. I think I helped fund it through their own site to play the super early build and then got the steam key from that when it released a long time after.

It’s way more fun with friends. I have a lot of fun by myself though trying to survive and see how far I can make it. Somewhere down the line they plan to (re)add NPCs so that should liven things up too

I’m so excited for Build 42. I’m a bit bummed that Multiplayer won’t be available from the start but I get that they want to focus on the base game before worrying about that avenue

I tried playing a couple of times with others, it was not my thing… I personally prefer alone. I have a certain style, I like base building and hoarding, and I go for very long games, usually lasting months IRL. I put in more than 1000 hours over many years, and I never got bored of PZ :)
