The march to theocracy continues.
I am not an American, but doesn’t America separate church and state? Like as one of the base rules? I know they are constantly pushing that boundary (for the “good” religions that is) but isn’t this just a “nope, state can’t send money to that.”
It’s seems pretty straight forward… What mental gymnastics are being used to get around that pesky fundamental cornerstone of the US Constitution?
The law only applies when it’s actually enforced by the judiciary. And the Christian theocrats have been infiltrating school boards and government bodies for decades to try to violate the separation to privilege their denomination above all others. Usually advocacy groups like the ACLU or satanic temple will try to contest the change in law or use it to show they can’t violate the establishment clause without violating the first amendment of the US construction.
They’re using this to provoke challenges against the wall of separation between church and state. They feel confident, with good reason, that the christofascist majority on the Supreme Court will reinterpret our Constitution to eliminate that law.
So it’s a power move.
It’s got a long history and really began in earnest under the W Bush administration. A lot of govt money started flowing toward religious schools and organizations around this time under the guise of traditional religious culture being a bulwark against terrorism and a source of right-thinking soldiers for the war.
Tell me again JD, how iLLeGaL ImMiGrANtS are burdening the taxpayers exactly?
Happening down in Texas as well. The HISD Superintendent looted millions from the local budget and expropriated it to a set of private Colorado schools he is invested in.
Spectrum News reported on Monday that the Third Future Schools charter school network, based in Colorado and founded by Miles, was using funds from the network’s Odessa school to offset losses at its Aurora, Colorado school. Miles’ sister now runs Third Future Schools.
…
The news outlet reported that the three Texas schools received $25 million in taxpayer dollars. About $15 million went to teachers and staff. But another $10 million was listed by Third Future Schools as unspecified administrative costs. Subsequent public documents obtained by Spectrum News revealed that more than $2 million went from Third Future Schools’ Texas operation to help cover losses at a Colorado school.
This is the new normal for educational funding in the state. Legalized embezzlement.
Christofascist timeline is a go.
*precedented
One of the GOPs major goals, I believe, is to do exactly this nationwide: spend public money on religious schools where their operatives can indoctrinate students, phase out public education altogether, except maybe as a prison pipeline for minorities.
Where can I sue?
