They were cult, and rich, enough to work as copyists, scribes and bookkeepers: activities well appreciated by the satraps. One could say that the Persians invented the bureaucracy.
And the Egyptians had a finger in the New Testament too, but the majority of Coptic contributions in the first two centuries was ruled out by Roma.
