I just signed up for a two month free trial to Crunchy Roll and am a little overwhelmed by my options. Haven’t watched much anime in my life (Dragon Ball, Akira, Death Note, One Punch) maybe a couple others.

First thing I watched was Chainsaw Man and really loved the vibe and main character of Denji. Then I watched like 5min of Attack On Titan and just thought “this show is going to be a drag isn’t it” and stopped watching lol.

If anyone can suggest any Anime that’s not to melodramatic or take itself to seriously. My favorite genre trends to be Dark/Black Comedies. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

    How’s your sexual humor?

Konosuba and DanDaDan are sexual comedies, really good ones that likely tickle your dark / black comedy tastebuds.

Overlord starts off a bit sexual for some random reason but focuses on Dark Fantasy. It’s about an Isekai where an ordinary human from Earth suddenly turns into an Elder Lich level 100 (his character he used to play in a video game).

One major leader is Albedo, a succubus (aka sex demon). So the sex jokes revolve around her or Shaltear (the vampire). Otherwise it’s pretty good dark fantasy + comedy IMO.

He is kind of horrified at the transformation but the army of demons and vampires look up to him, so he’s kinda… doing his best to lead them???

Certainly got black comedy here, but also dark fantasy as he commits atrocities.

Most dark fantasy anime have elements (or even huge focus) on sexual humor. That’s all.

We can go to like Ranking of Kings which IMO is really solid but it’s more of a melodrama + shonen. Almost no sexual humor at all, really solid.

OddTaxi is another favorite of mine, a Noir-like murder mystery except the main character is a Taxi Driver who is thrust to the center of the mystery. He has a perfect memory however so all of his customers, when taken together, basically allows the Taxi Driver to solve the mystery.

I’m about 50/50 myself. Sometimes I’m in the mood for it, sometimes it feels forced and unnecessary.

And I know some friends who absolutely will stop watching something if there is even one sex joke.

So I try to collect different shows with different levels of sexual humor.

DanDaDan is really popular right now, so participating with the overall anime community with an ongoing show is a worthwhile experience. So long as you’re into missing penises and Ghost curses eating alien dicks for power ya know?

I joke a bit but… Not really. Lol. There’s nothing explicit in DanDaDan but the imagery and implications make it clear what they’re going for. The main characters are actually really wholesome. But the horror elements definitely go places.

I 100% recommend DanDaDan btw. Probably the anime of the year, no joke. Just as long as your sexual humor tolerance is high enough to accept this stuff.

I second 86 and Fate although they can be pretty serious. That said, I recommend starting Fate from Unlimited Blade Works then to the Heaven’s Feel movie trilogy before going to Zero since Zero was meant to be a prequel and spoils Heaven’s Feel. That was how the original source material was meant to be read. Additional bonus in that Unlimited Blade Works has a much lighter tone that is more approachable for people new to Fate.

    • Dandadan – just the sheer manic artistry of it
    • Dead-Dead Demons (“Dede-dede”) Destruction – surprisingly apt for our times. I’ll leave it at that

Last one I watched was Mashle. If you like Harry Potter you might enjoy this. Though it is not exactly what you’d think. Give it a couple episodes.

Ascendance of Bookworm is always worth a shoutout. Good, organic world building and well planned storytelling without it becoming an empty power-fantasy.
