Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Nametag: Self-hostable personal relationships managerEnglish
2·2 months agoLooks good. I’ve considered a personal CRM for some time and have been using Obsidian a little bit. Having said that, I am open to something more tailored to the task. A question: what would it look like if someone wanted to export their data out of this tool later? Do I need to be a programmer to migrate away or is it relatively simple?

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Does anyone have experience with Mumble?English
1·4 months agoMy Minecraft pals used mumble at various points. It’s less polished than some options. I like the FOSS and the simplicity but the certificates confused me as a noob. Would still recommend.
I run a beelink mini, not the weakest one, not the most powerful one, and it handles docker containers and VMs fine. I don’t have a tkn of integrated storage, but rather this machine handles apps while a separate NAS does all the file storage. Most I ever had running was 2 VMs and a handful of negligible docker containers but I still had plenty of ram and CPU to spare. I also think the minisforum stuff looks good. Their n5 pro nas just came out and would have made a good server with room to grow. I decided against it because I have parts and I want to use them :-) so the beelink is holding down the fort while I Frankenstein together a rig from my old gaming PC in a huge case that will host all my apps and less critical media. Home assistant which will stay on the beelink because it needs high availability. I’ve been curious how the lowest priced minisforum models would fare.
I miss this from cloud hosting. It’s helpful to be able to save, clone, or do whatever with the current machine state and easily just flash back to where you were if you mess something up. Might be too much to set up for my current homelab though. My server does have btrfs snapshots of everything directly in grub which has let me roll back a few big screwups here and there.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•Your Neighbors Support Car Dependence Less Than You Think
0·1 year agoAlso, how many of you have ridden in the car with someone who experienced or witnessed too many accidents? Some of those people would pogo stick 2 miles to the nearest store rather than sit next to you while you back a car out of the garage. I think a lot of people who have experienced the downside of cars have sympathy for the idea that it doesn’t have to be like this. We could have… options!
Has friend 2 set his name servers to something custom, or is he using your network’s default? My partner uses an iPhone and it has some sort of built in DNS so she doesn’t benefit from me installing DNS based adblock on the network. You could see if a similar thing is at play.

Technology@lemmy.world•Facebook and Instagram to Unleash AI-Generated ‘Users’ No One Asked ForEnglish
1·1 year agoThey will be able to steer entire cultures and countries without ever appearing as if they were sitting in the drivers seat. This is the social control endgame playing out in front of our very eyes. Why use violence to control people when you can subconsciously persuade with bandwagonning and peer influence by tempting people into parasocial relationships with AIs you control. Expect the AIs to offer real benefits, but with hidden catches. Like how rats are killed with 10% poison and 90% tasty treats, we will be steered to our doom by exploiting our desires and weaknesses and our inability/unwillingness to take into account the future effects of our decisions today. This is nothing new, it’s just a larger, subtler, more wide reaching way of doing it.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•My Silly, Thoroughly Unoptimized, Noobish Network ConfigurationEnglish
2·1 year agoThanks this put me on a track to fixing my issues and learning something new. I cleaned up my DHCP, checked my incoming and outgoing ports in the firewall, and everything seems to be working as it is supposed to. The eeros don’t have a “true AP mode” from what I read online, but bridging them and turning off the wireless on the modem worked.

Android@lemmy.world•Who are 2024's best phone case manufacturers?English
2·1 year agoOh wow, those do look good. Sadly just Apple/Samsung. I’d worry that I’d forget the magnet and set my phone on top of an external hard drive or something.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you react if you found out your teen is in a poly relationship?
4·1 year agoYou might also check out the book “More Than One”. Polyamory is a beautiful relationship style that I have seen done very well and very poorly, just like traditional relationships. Triads can sometimes be problematic when one part of the relationship is preestablished. Balancing everyone’s needs is difficult and people screw up all the time. If this guy is able to date outside the relationship, is she also able to enjoy that same priviledge? How about the other girl? Who sets the rules in the relationship and how is it handled when one person disagrees with the others on something? How do you respond to " you always side with (other partner)". Polyamory is hard work. Not sure what country/state you are in, but birth control could become an issue for her. As with any relationship subculture/orientation/style I am concerned for my poly friends and what the future holds for them and doubly concerned for the women.
Can you imagine being paid for your work in digital jewels and rubies? It’s not there yet, but were getting closer and closer to being a modern day Tennessee Ernie Ford, paid in scrip and buying everything at the company store.

politics @lemmy.world•Maga’s violent threats spike as little girls threatened with rape
1·1 year agoTrue. Also, it has to be individual actions since we can’t rely on the Democrats and we definitely can’t rely on the Republicans to fix this from the top down. We’re actually going to have to talk to the misogynists in our lives. Why can’t people fucking act right?
Real men respect women.

politics @lemmy.world•Maga’s violent threats spike as little girls threatened with rape
4·1 year agoI’ve been very frustrated that these guys bad behavior is being generalized to all guys. I’m viewed with suspicion despite taking active steps to make things better for the women in my life. I’m not perfect, and I have my moments, but I’m not the undatable Republican dude we’re talking about here.
This isn’t the women’s fault, but I wish I could give some of these asshole misogynists a kick in the face for fucking it up for the rest of us. Having said that, I will be ban happy as a motherfucker the next time I run public events (used to teach classes, think dance, yoga, etc.)

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•wanderer v0.10.0 - a self-hosted GPS track databaseEnglish
2·1 year agoI saw this the last time you posted an update and am finally going to have some time to try it. I also gained some docker knowledge since then. Right now, it looks like a nice AllTrails replacement, and below the surface, I see a Strava killer developing!
Also, consider sharing to #bikenight on Mastadon. Lots of nerdy cyclists on there.
Due to immunocompromised people I regularly interact with, I masked and isolated much more and much longer than the average person in my area. I still keep a mask in the car and on my bike. They also come in useful when you don’t want to be recognized or bothered by people. I’m not sure if they cause problems for some facial recognition tech, but that would be a welcome bonus.

Technology@lemmy.world•"Windows Intelligence": Microsoft may drop Copilot in major AI rebrandingEnglish
10·1 year agoI agree. In a vacuum, Copilot is a good name, potentially S tier. Too bad they shoved it in everyone’s face and made us all hate it. Now they have to rebrand and hope we don’t hate that too. Spoiler, we will.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How Will Synology's HVEC Removal in DSM 7.2 effect me?English
1·1 year agoThanks for giving me the push to try some more third party apps. I’ve been playing with docker for a few days now and am feeling far more comfortable than before. I still worry about mounting shares in the right places with the right permissions and the right way of handling that, but overall, this community’s encouragement helped me take my self hosting to the next level. Maybe I’m begintermediate now :-)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Hey Lemmy, where are you watching the results?
5·1 year agoThe county assessors site for everything state and local. I will briefly check national, but I dont need the pageantry of network television to rile me up anymore than I already am.

Great to hear. I might give it a try in a limited area, like meeting people from a new hobby or friend group, then expand from there if it works f or me. I definitely see the benefit, especially for ADHD types who might otherwise forget to call someone for 1…2…3…12 months. :-D Thank you for making a cool piece of software.
