  • Mhm I think the diagnosis is mainly for yourself to have closure. Now you can better understand why and maybe you’ll learn some tricks from autism communities to make life better.

You don’t need to tell anyone. You can, but if there’s no good reason, you don’t have to.

Sometimes it makes social life or work life easier because people start to understand you better, but this only applies if it’s an issue.

You can be happy you figured yourself out a bit better and you got a new club of people you probably fit in with :)

    Congrats on getting the diagnosis!

May the textures feel comfy, may your relationships with people be smoother, and may you have fulfilling special interests!

Here’s your obligatory cozy cottage, and may the odds be ever in your favor :)

  • The one thing that really trips me up is that I am now really interested at how many people are assholes because they aren’t able to be good, and how many do it for other reasons…

    Two things come to mind:

    • a psychopath wants to be good because he knows this will give him a better social stand. But he doesn’t really get it, because some things his peers do just look irrational to him. At some point he just reverts back to manipulation because that’s what he understands.
    • an autistic guy tries to be nice, but he doesn’t get it. People are puzzles to him, and the way he is nice is very different from everyone else. He starts becoming jaded and stops trying to be nice like everyone else.

Both examples are people who don’t have the extended knowledge of what “being nice” is, and therefore they stop being nice. I would love to know how big that percentage is amongst all assholes.

This is also intertwined with the fact that if there’s an asshole for every 20 people who are nice (just as a thought experiment), you wouldn’t remember the nice people, because they don’t give you a headache. The asshole does. So for us, the percentage always looks really skewed, in fact it’s almost exclusively the assholes we hear about.

  • Used it as a toy for the longest time but by now I had to do a lot of coding and I was actually able to make good use of code completion AI.

Saved me about a quarter of my time. Definitely worth something. (FYI I use supermaven free tier).

Also I’m using ChatGPT to ask dumb questions because that way I don’t have to constantly interrupt other people. And also as a starting point to research something. I usually start with ChatGPT, then Google specific jargon and depending on the depth of the topic I will read either studies, articles or forum threads afterwards.

It did take me a long time to figure out which AI and when to use it, so mandating this onto the entire government is a gong show more than anything.

No AI is not useless, but it’s always a very specific use case.

If you’re interested, I suggest using the free ChatGPT version to ask dumb questions together with Google to get a feel for what you get. Then you can better decide if it’s worth it for you.
