This says there are fat naked mole rats, but it says their role is to connect to other naked mole rats communities by digging when the ground is soft from rain. That’s quite different from the claim that their role is to block the tunnels to stop them flooding.

Not OP, I couldn’t find a paper. Just this site that makes the same claim almost word for word, and cites a youtube video of a lecture at Stanford. I didn’t watch the video, but this seems best described as a “plausible” explanation rather than a proven fact.

It makes me think of waves breaking on the shore. Perhaps the old route out of Wellington with the road next to the sea and the waves that sometimes broke over the wall onto the road. The green is like an ominous stormy sky from a story book, and the darker bit between the lighter top and the waves at the bottom is like the swell of the sea. There’s probably a monster in the water.

To be honest, the whole thing doesn’t sound that appetising to me! I’m just not a big spider fan in general, so swapping the tonic probably wouldn’t help.

That’s honestly pretty amazing that you’ve been here a year and haven’t seen a troll! Though you’re on an instance with a very active and determined admin, there is definitely a difference in how much you see between instances because of how removals work.

Me as an instance admin sitting here reading about how Lemmy doesn’t have trolls and Russian bots, while I’m in a chat with other instance admins and mods where we need to actively coordinate to fight the trolls and Russian bots 😐

From what I’ve seen, they aren’t building the games, they are licensing existing ones. There are decent games in the mix.

I thought I’d better post an update about the Lemmy.nz census. I have been working on analysing the data and writing a post, but there’s probably still a while before I’ll be done. There’s quite a lot to get through.

Also, if anyone knows any good tools for generating graphs then let me know! I’m using LibreOffice Calc as an excuse to learn how to use it, and it’s graphs aren’t that great. I can break out Excel if I have to but to be fair Excel graphs aren’t much better.

Not sure about age 56 but by the time you get to 90, many people’s brains just aren’t what they used to be. If you’re a scammer, it doesn’t matter if 9/10 people see you coming, you just latch onto the 1/10 that can’t tell they are being scammed.

By 90 my grandmother had a Benjamin Button memory. She didn’t recognise the youngest grandkids, over time she couldn’t remember the oldest ones, and then her kids started fading from her memory starting with the youngest.

Even before that point, in her 80s (like most of these victims), if you walked up to her, said you’re a police officer and need her EFTPOS PIN to investigate fraud, she would have told you it.

You might be onto something. But also most scams originate from overseas, this guy was dumb enough to do it in NZ and apparently did something that led police to where there could be a foot chase.

Nice to hear of a scammer getting caught for once.

It’s such a weird way to subsidise tax cuts. I guess it wasn’t free for long so they wanted to get it changed back before people thought if it as a new fee instead of an end to a short period of free prescriptions.
