In a wonderful turn of events: Captive’s War is narrated by the cery same narrator!
Hey, sorry to Necro an old post but are you aware of Corey’s newest series The Captive’s War? There’s a book and a Novella out right now and they’re incredible.
I’m currently listening to Livesuit by James SA Corey. It’s part of their new series that released this year called The Captives War. It’s a Novella/Interquel pretty typical of their release style.
It takes place in an incredibly unknowably distant future for humanity. We follow a squad of Livesuit infantry who have fused their bodies with technology to fight an unfathomable legion of alien conquerors. An enemy that has never lost a war then uses the best traits of conquered races to continue their war.
Why it’s so good is because the author(s) have an incredible way of describing people and the world they interact with. Images are vivd and believable. While being so alien, and futuristic Corey manages to write a world you can imagine yourself in.
Additionally, their novellas always take place in the same world, but are completely stand alone stories from the main series so the depth of world building is just… chef’s kiss
Both writers were originally working on writing RPGs and TTRPGs so their style just brings me back to sitting at a table with friends, some drinks and a Character Sheet for a hopeful lvl 3 wizard.
In my experience that’s exactly it. They’re the same kinds of people who also say “You know, if I was an attractive young girl I would love to make money staying home and showing my tits on the internet for money.” But when confronted with the reality of it all they would rather demean people who actually do that and make more money than them.
The fact is a lot of them are threatened by women who make more money than them while also feeling like those women owe them something for being attractive. Like I said, these people do “shake their tits for the rich.” In one way or the other. It’s only that the people who are actually shaking their tits are the honest ones while the bootlickers cry for the boot to stomp down harder.
Well yeah. But to them that isn’t “Shaking their tits” it’s “Rubbing elbows with the social elite to climb the corporate ladder.”
Selling your soul is still selling your soul. Doesn’t matter if it’s to the devil or their lieutenants.
We all shake our tits for the rich in one way or the other. Some are just a little more honest to themselves about it.
You’re a model in 1993. In order brush elbows with the elite, make connections and continue finding work you are given an invite by your modelling agency. You attend because this can only be good for your career.
You get sexually harrassed.
You didn’t ask for this. You’re trying to make a living. Titans of the industry see you as a bag of meat to toss around and abuse.
“You were asking for it.”
I think I would! Thank you for the recommendation.
Canadians had a vendetta against the germans and refused to even acknowledge their humanity on a whole.
Canadians were the recipients of some of the most brutal german assaults, gas attacks and night raids. As well there was a rumour early in the war that the germans crucified a Canadian in no mans land. Since then all bets were off.
Canadian soldiers used to throw tins of food into German trenches during quiet periods then when the calls came for more they would throw grenades instead. Ensuring they killed as many Germans as possible.
Canadians also perfected night stealth raids where they would sneak into German lines and cut the throats of every other man. Leaving the Germans to wake up to their numbers decimated without a sign of the enemy.
At one conference at the Hague the Germans promised to stop using gas weapons if the Canadians agreed to stop using birdshot in their shotguns and the Canadians said no.
Canadians really don’t do war kindly.
The gloves fit on both hands…
Why would you like to see a supermajority in order to join an economic union?
Interesting! I never really found the combat to be all that tedious or enemies too difficult so long as you kept up with alchemy, oils and gear upgrades.
Obviously, different strokes for different folks. There’s a reason one of the difficulties is story only.
The sacrifice you’re talking about is trading one genocide for another.
You realise this, right?
I try to get everyone to try playing on Death March, no fast travel.
I did my first playthrough like this. There’s so much to see in the world and so many paths to take. Fast travel is neat and all but you may miss out on so much. I took it a step further and also didn’t leave regions/nations until I completed the map. I found more incidental quests by taking a wrong turn or a shortcut over a hill than I did by following the main quests.
On Death March: It’s actually not hard at all and feels like how the gake should be played. What it actually does is forces you to look at the bestiary, learn or guess weaknesses and attack patterns then use potions, spells and pils to fight enemies. It actually feels like playing the witcher as lore accurately as possible. Going to the local herbalist, buying supplies, meditating then hunting down the enemies.
You’re taking what I’m saying in bad faith. Then proposing a solution that just would never work. You’re calling for the cessation of a (ethno)state. One whose theology is a large contributing factor to hostilities they perpetrate and that are targeted at them.
Keeping Israel is not a great option, nor is it even the better of two evils. But the end of Israel would spell the end of the Israeli peoples by way of genocide as well. A solution where Israel is forced to cooperate, sit at the table and work things out with a two state solutiom is the clear option. Though that will never happen under Netanyahu.
You also can’t ignore the fact that every single one of their neighbours (nations, not people) would see every last Israeli dead or displaced. Regardless of how the israeli state came to be, they are now a legitimate ethnic group in the area who can easilly become the target of their own brand of ethnic cleansing.
This is not black and white at all.
What I’m getting at is that nobody will touch that mess with a ten-foot pole. It is in no middle eastern nation’s best interest to keep Israel around. If the UN isn’t going to hop into Israel and prevent atrocities commited against Palestine by a so called american ally what are they going to do when Hezbollah and Hamas perpetrate the same while backed by Iran?
Have you by chance read Shake Hands With the Devil? It covers the UN response to genocide in Rwanda and it wasn’t pretty.
The middle east basically just gets to choose their favourite flavour of Genocide forever now.
Both examples you provided resulted in some of the most horrific genocides in modern memory perpetrated by the dominant ethnic groups against ethnic minorities seen as outsiders or invaders. These issues are still not reconciled to this day and still amount to daily acts of violence or terror.
Are you suggesting in your answer that the acceptable end to Israeli colonialism is the tables being turned on them? Because that’s what would happen.
Israel does need to de-escalate, disarm, de-colonise while recognising the Palestinian state. Allowing any of their neighbours to oversee this would just see another genocide perpetrated.
Either way the status quo becomes genocide. So, what’s our goal here?
Related questions: Would Israelis be given the chance to integrate or, would the newly shifted power dynamic just lead to Israel’s neighbours perpetrating the same horrors against Israel?
Basically, have these differences not gone on long enough that almost any of their neighbours would be willing to return the favour?
In what ways would this paralell the end of apartheid?
What does peace look like once Israel ends hostilities and the US cuts off supplies?
To add on: After a certain level is reached there are a multitude of tile combinations you have to avoid or they cause a hard crash. I believe oldschool tetris used to be played until the very first hard crash and that’s where everyone thought the record would end. Prior to that was the development of rolling which allowed players to get past the original game over state that sped tiles up too fast to react to.
Now we have players so proficient they’ve memorised crash states, and are rolling over the game.
I wonder how long until Points + Prestige become an antiquated measuring system.
What da heck? Garl is so sweet!
