    Explanation: The Romans were very fond of their dogs, and expressed that with great regularity. Human slaves, on the other hand, were seen as a variety of tool - to be used without regard for their feelings. While there were incentives for slaves, and not just punishments, Roman attitudes towards their slaves were always to give them just enough so that they would do the work required of them - not to treat them as fully realized human beings worthy of basic human dignity. For skilled slaves, this meant a small salary and an eventual chance to buy their freedom - for other slaves, it meant being tossed into the mines to die after 6 months of back-breaking labor and torment. Gruesome.
