minus-squaresamus12345@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up0·5 months agoI’m referring to American English specifically. “o” would make me think it’s pronounced “thoat”, but it’s the sound I meant. “thorough” rhymes with “oh” in Standard American English. “Hiccough” is a good one. I always hated that spelling and prefer “hiccup” for that reason.
minus-squarezarkanian@sh.itjust.workslinkfedilinkarrow-up0·5 months ago “Hiccough” is a good one. I always hated that spelling and prefer “hiccup” for that reason. TIL those are both pronounced the same way. (Gaol/jail is worse, though.)
minus-squarezarkanian@sh.itjust.workslinkfedilinkarrow-up0·5 months agoYes, English is weird, but this word still breaks rules. “Gh” (pronounced “f”) is never at the beginning of a word, and “ti” (pronounced “sh”) is never at the end.
minus-squaredisguy_ovahea@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkarrow-up0·5 months agoOh, you’re absolutely correct. I think it’s just meant to poke fun at the complexity of the language.
