Very near term, not bad. I have a bed in fixed housing for the night with my house batteries charging off mains ahead of the first major cold snap of the year. Beyond that is another question.

The weather this year has been crazy variable so far - even in New Zealand where it should be summer we’ve gotten some severe Antarctic cold snaps! I hope you’re keeping warm, one step at a time.

It’s a good week, although I just obviously got banned by @OneRedFox@beehaw.org, the mod in the Socialism community. Seems that different views are not welcome. I don’t complain (it’s your server, your rules), just wanted to let you know that. I was on Beehaw quite a while and didn’t expect something like that.

    Happy new year to everyone.

I don’t know the case, but hopefully the mod is not closely related to the admin team, so it’s not a big problem

Happy new year! I just caught up on that drama. On the one hand, i get your point about categorization of posts and communities. It can be alienating to go to a community expecting one type of post and then seeing the conversation is in a totally different place. On the other hand, OneRedFox clearly puts a LOT of effort into keeping that specific subcommunity alive, and they did explain clearly that their environmentalism article was from a socialist publication, while yours was not. Snapping back with this sassy comment was also not a good look on your part.

Why is it reasonable for OneRedFox to delete your article but leave theirs up? I think it’s pretty clear that OneRedFox is very plugged into articles and books from the global socialist community. As the sidebar says, c/socialism is: “A place for all leftist and labor news and discussion, as long as you’re nice about it. Non-socialists are welcome to come to learn, though it’s hard to get to in-depth discussions if the community is constantly fighting over the basics.”

There is a subset of online socialists and leftists that are very plugged in like this, and for them, it can be very frustrating to talk to people that aren’t as plugged in, because it can feel like you are constantly going over the basics with newbies when what you really crave is deep, meaningful discussion that challenges your existing views. I think OneRedFox is one of those people, and they view c/Socialism as a place for those kinds of discussions, separate from similar posts that might take place on communities like Environmentalism or Politics.

I don’t know your exact political views, but I’m guessing you haven’t spent a lot of time in recent years reading socialist publications or talking with socialists online. If that is the case, then I think that community simply isn’t for you. Which is fine - not everyone has to be into every community on Beehaw. I’m not subbed to c/programming because i’m not a programmer, so i don’t really care about the articles and I can’t contribute meaningfully to the conversations. I’m subbed to c/socialism because I am curious about it and I am an anti-capitalist leftist for sure. But I don’t spend a lot of time reading socialist publications or talking with socialists online, so I rarely comment there because I know I am out of my depth.

Anyway, I don’t know if any of that helps reestablish your faith in Beehaw, but I wanted to give my two cents. I hope you are well!

Eesh, reading the comments and the immature modlog response is disappointing, that was actually an interesting and respectful discussion in a community that doesn’t seem to have any activity. It seems like lemmy as a whole is just falling into the same issues non-federated discussion/social media have at this point with moderation and communities. It’s like there’s no real solution; the less people there are, the more insular and detached the community and its moderation is, but the more people there are, the more generic and poor quality the discussion becomes. There’s a lot of communities like that one too that you can see aren’t really communities, but just a few people posting over and over to prop it up as one. Then the minute there’s some discussion from a new person, they’re removed.

I will say communities about wildlife and science, like the ones on mander.xyz, are consistently good. Seems to be an exception. Maybe it’s because it attracts people who want to learn and discuss things they’re passionate about? Maybe some topics are just doomed to fail no matter where their communities are. I’m going on a tangent now, but I’m just tired of every space on the internet being like this, even the ones meant to break away from it. Honestly Beehaw as a whole is pretty good though, I did stop using this account since the announcement about it leaving but it still seems to be going strong!

I’m a week late to the discussion but just wanted to add some context about the last line: this was the announcement in September 2023 about that, The Beehaw project is entering some significant challenges. I took some time away from the Fediverse myself and also hadn’t been keeping up with it much over 2024, but I guess the new year’s spirit pushed me into trying to make it stick again (here’s to better habits this year!)

By the way, I think you’re right about small community groups, they are definitely hard to run and I can understand why a lot of them moved to more-closed discord groups with closed invites instead. I guess there will always be different ways for humans to connect in the social ecosystem, so at least there will be something out there.

In any case I guess welcome back and I hope you can find some cool discussions here again!

Me and my wife hosted new years eve with friends, was a lot of fun but holy fuck I’m tired. Gonna try to make the most of the rest of the week.

There’s a family event on Saturday that I’m really not looking forward to. Meeting relatives you never talk to etc. It’s been mentally draining me so much, I don’t think I should go, if only for mental health reasons. But it’s hard to cancel on them because I feel guilty for never seeing them… So the cycle continues.

I feel tired, but in a good way. Met up with more friends, ate good food, and had fun. My friends were kind enough to treat me a bit since they uh, understand my current financial position as broke college student™.

But I got good news this week: I now have two jobs! One being the internship, and the other is a student desk job (aka I get paid while doing homework type of job). It’ll be busy, but it should be manageable. So I need to budget a plan to visit a friend this summer and pay some of my loans again (considering that I’ll finally have some money to do so). Haha…

Other than that I’ve been studying again. Working on a community project for my career path, and figuring out my presidential duties for my club (club funding due date is approaching).

I still have about two weeks of break left, but it feels like my vacation is done. And honestly…I’m good with that. I feel like this was the most mentally productive break I’ve had in years. (-◡-◍)

The holidays suck. You finally have a little time but everything is cancelled because it falls on a holiday and everyone is out of town. It’s lonely as fuck

Not great. Depression taking its toll on my relationships but I really don’t trust the only therapist I was able to get through work. I don’t think she’s going to be much help.

I’m also super sick, my throat is white with infection, and customers still keep making fun of me or yelling at me for wearing a mask in 2025. I’m starting to think I’m the stupid one for assuming it could be contagious.

I’m sorry, but 2025 is gonna suck.

Hope you’re feeling better mate! Finding a good fit for therapy is so hard… even if they aren’t much help if it’s not costing anything, you can try and figure out exactly what you don’t like to make finding a better therapist in the future a bit easier.

Thank you! ❤️ Definitely better physically. Probably a little worse on the relationship front unfortunately, just waiting for the next therapy session before I make any more moves.

I had a nice past two weeks! I got to spend some nice time with family. I hope everyone has a very good 2025 and that by the end of it, we’re all doing better than in 2024. I really hope you all have a great year

I’ve started reading Atomic Habits. I remember it being recommended a lot back on Reddit, so it was in the back of my mind for years. I can recommend it here too.

I’ve heard a lot about habits and mentions of that book too! I found an article about his four laws – make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, and make it satisfying (ctrl+f to jump down to it) and the cues/cravings responsive/rewarding cycle, which kinda makes me want to look into it in more detail too. I hope the book was useful!
