This could go a long way towards fighting online censorship. One less issue when an authoritarian overreach gets your domain seized. Pretty awesome.

Learning/practice, and any use that feeds in sensitive data you want to keep on-prem.
Unless you’re set to retire within the next 5 years, the best reason is to keep your resume up to date with some hands-on experience. With the way they’re trying to shove AI into every possible application, there will be few (if any) industries untouched. If you don’t start now, you’re going to be playing catch up in a few years.

I like borg with rsync.

I’m not sure it would intelligently handle that on its own. There’d need to be some manual work on your end.

I recommend looking into a borg/borgmatic setup.

Does it need to be exposed to the internet? Putting it behind a vpn would be best.
Besides that, just make sure only the users you need to have access to ssh logins, and use keys for extra hardening. Keep your system updated. Limit that system’s access to other systems on your network, so if it is compromised, they can’t use it as a pivot point for the rest of your setup.
The other commenter’s suggestion of fail2ban is also solid.

This Russiaphobia is so completely out of fucking control.

This is why I’ve stuck with Emby.
I get why people switched, and I’m open to it eventually, but Emby is much more polished. That’s not to say the Emby clients don’t also crash from time to time.

I just wish their official app would get out of beta already. It’s been stuck in limbo forever.

LoL. That feature is literally the only reason I also have a Plex docker pointing to my library. But they’ve definitely not been supporting it for a while, because I don’t think it’s worked well in forever. Last few times I tried it with friends, we ended up having to just try to hit play at the same time.
Oh well. One less container now.

Apple TV is rad, because you can pair it with a controller, and use the Steam link app to play on your computer from another room.
No need to have the computer near the tv for couch gaming. No need to listen to the pc fans screaming.

Do the Ecobees have any issue if you block their access to the internet? Any issues making it lan only?

Thanks! I’ll give it a whirl.

What self-hosted alternative would you recommend for document collaboration? Word processing docs, spreadsheets, pdf’s, etc.
I was using Nextcloud, but it’s not been as straightforward for file-sharing as I’d like, multiple people can’t work on a document at once, and it doesn’t save changes consistently (especially with fillable PDF’s).

No, it’s sinophobic propaganda.

Microsoft has been steadily moving away from backwards compatibility and trying to be a one-stop shop for everything. They just want Windows to be focused on data collection and spying at this point. And your gaming data isn’t as valuable as you might think.
If they don’t have one for it already, they’ll just want to make a compatible Xbox app to run on Linux. If Linux can serve the gaming folks, and they get their data with an Xbox sign-in, it’s way less work and cost for them to keep Windows running the games well. I doubt they feel threatened at all.

Yeah, China doesn’t have jurisdiction over me. I don’t have to worry about the CCP showing up at my door to harass me for what I post. But it’s a very real threat from the US feds.

Thankfully no one cares when Forbes posts their hit list every year.

I’m not sure a guy who has actually aided in multiple genocides is going to get his feelings hurt with these schoolyard insults.
These kind of changes will go a long way towards making it more accessible for the less technically inclined. Glad to see some actual progress in that direction, instead of the standard ‘git good’ style of Linux gatekeeping.
