To me backups in the cloud are no backups. I could never physically get to the disk and someone else controls my account.

My 1st backups go to a NAS (with encrypted raid disks) in my garage that is 35 meters away from my house. The 2nd backup are encrypted files (encrypted disks are not practical, it’s a challenge after power-dips etc) to a storage at my daughters place. That second option goes via my own vpn which also gives me the opportunity to go out on the internet there (convenient for some tv shows my wife wanna see)

Above all, install fail2ban

For all we know, they might have some cables or pipes running there in which case it’s done nicely

My first “rack” where just wooden beams. Worked like a charm.

Then I got a 19" rack for free. Cut out 90cm frtom the middel and “welded” back together so its roughly 150cm and fit where i wanted it. A light that comes on when the door opens made it perfect

There are variouse alternatives to see what ports are open. Usually they autyo scan just the ip you come from, to avoid being used to scan a potential target.

If you want more, just use Greenbone. Run it twice. Once from another IP just to know how the world sees you. One time internal network and add accounts to greenbone allowing it to login and check further.

My view: Unless I can access the hardware 24/7/365 the data isn’t mine for ‘they’ can deny me access to my data anytime while they keep full access. (hence store it decryped)

I only use their WiFi because I got some in- and outdoor ap’s for free. The Wifi manager is selfhosted and has no internet access. For upgradesi downoad the deb file, trasnsfer and install. It’s not the best out there, but works for me and i’m still happy with it.

I (still) have and use one, but it has it’s limitations. (t.ex. usage in the car)

I have an apc 3000 which is a fantastic device. But it uses more power than my pc, switch, router and ap’s combined. The grid is stable enough for me to rely on things to survive or can be restored from either the local or the offsite backup.

Are you kidding me? True, there is time involved. My biggest ‘sin’ right now is “home gallery” for it works on MY directory structure which I won’t give up.

The geoguessing game that hides in it is superb ! I’m still amazed with the images I’ve been able to locate. Sometimes 40 years back.

Power consumption is the 2nd thing i look for in my IT devices (first is “do I need internet/cloud services to run it” … Yes is an absolut disqualifier)

Bit broad question but Sounds like a nas can be a way to go. Read up on raid and think about your backup strategy first.

(I use a synology nas with 4Tb disk at home that backups to an offsite readynas with 4x 4tb disks in raid config and encryption)
