I have several of these set up. Mostly for opening windows to reduce AC use. If the temp outside is dropping and is within two degrees of interior temp, then it’s time to open the windows. And the inverse during autumn to close them. I could have saved you some time probably.

Don’t forget to check out Youtarr. I think it hits all the targets. You can do channels, playlists or individual videos. It has an option for a proxy URL to use to download which I believe can be set up with a self-hosted VPN. And it formats and sends things directly to Jellyfin.

Okay, but what happens if you spell favorites wrong?

I have been doing ADA compliance professionally for a while. There is no magic on this one. There’s no existing solution that doesn’t require manual interference because it requires context. Human context. It has to be understood to be understandable. There’s a few things you can do to improve overall accessibility but nothing in a suite. I specialize in InDesign and it’s probably the most powerful document solution going. But it requires a lot of work to meet the most basic of requirements.

Using the Ecobee thermostat, I use the built in weather module in Home Assistant to give local weather data to the system. In summer, I set it up to watch for the lowest overnight temps via forecast, and trigger on the lowest temperatures we’d see. Then I’d drop the house temp to 66 or 64 degrees when the AC had to do the least amount of work. Then I’d use the basement air to keep the upstairs cool enough and use the AC as little as possible.

My last house was old and had some drafts I couldn’t find. So in the winter, if the weather turned to windy I’d increase the temp a degree or two for comfort.

I mean, it renews every year. The worst case scenario is it’s against the TOS of the registrar and they can suspend your domain. Do with that what you will of course. Also, I was doing that with another domain but fixed it when I moved it to porkbun with their free anonymity service. I wasn’t going to pay domain.com’s ridiculous fees for it.

I’ve come to the conclusion that nextcloud is probably the best single Google replacement. “Old hardware” is a pretty broad definition, as I’ve still got Zip disks kicking around. But more than likely, you can run Nextcloud AIO reasonably well. The more RAM the better for sure. But you do get an online office, document storage and sharing, calendar, contacts, tasks (to replace Google Keep), text and video chat, picture storage, etc. Doing all of that really well can take a beefier machine, but keep things in perspective, be patient and you can at least get it going to see if you want to expand in the future.

My preference is paying for Unraid and using spaceinvaderone’s Nextcloud AIO package and accompanying video tutorial is the way to go. Unraid isn’t free, but I highly, highly recommend paying for it as a platform. I feel like it still allows some challenges in getting things set up but in a more fun way to reduce frustrations. And Unraid just does so much.

Once I changed the default model, immich search became amazing. I want to show it off to people but alas, way too many NSFW pics in my library. I would create a second “clean” version to show off to people but I’ve been too lazy.

My preference is just Cloudflare with or without nginx. Not sure if you’re using a hypervisor or not but it makes things exceedingly easy and I feel plenty safe enough inside of a Cloudflare tunnel. I stream a lot of data from Jellyfin. All day long, several streams to several people for over a year now with no problems. Last I knew, Cloudflare removed the language about video streaming from their TOS. Not sure if that’s changed but functionality on my end hasn’t.

I am using Unraid but I’ve installed the Cloudflare tunnel in docker containers and TrueNAS without many issues. Takes a bit of copying/pasting to get set up but it’s not terrible and everything is very responsive to make sure you’re doing things correctly.
