Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What are some unique games to host server's of?English
2·4 months agoI need to do this, good memories!
Ah, right! I didn’t scroll past the Newswire-section because my brain parsed it as a “Related articles”-section with links to previous posts. I am no longer confused!
Sorry, what does this have to do with the post? I tried to find references to it but couldn’t, and now I am confused.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Bad experience on selfhosting nextcloudEnglish
5·5 months agoI’ve been running tge AIO container for several years now and it is running perfectly fine. I only enable whatever I use, so for instance no Collabora.
But for Collabora, while it should be good for single-person use, if you require some kind of collaborative simultaneous work, you should probably set up the high-performance backend. I did this at work for a NC-instance hosted via Hetzner and it works well when we tried it, but we don’t really use those kinds of tools much in our daily work.
I like FreshRSS - I also have some readers that connect to my instance, like FluentReader that provides a better full article view, but I mostly use FreshRSS directly these days.

Self Hosted - Self-hosting your services.@lemmy.ml•[Question] Why does a Docker container have access to a directory on my system not explicitly mounted as volume?
0·1 year agoAh, got it! That sounds like an unhealthy amount of trust to give to a container, but I understand the need to give that access to the mastercontainer.

0·1 year agorsync from one server to the other.
When actually loading in the backup from the Nextcloud AIO interface, I specified the path on my local system (not the container).
I don’t see the difference
I consider storing articles more as building a starting-point for research, rather than something I definitely think I will read at some point. I store by topic that is of interest to me, and when I want to do a deep-dive, I already have a bunch of articles waiting for me.
I use Zotero for this. Used to use it as purely a reference manager for scientific papers, but started storing all kinds of stuff for archiving or later reading. My workflow is getting all news/articles I might want to read from RSS, and add to Zotero what I want to keep.
With the browser plugin you can store snapshots as well, so you can preserve it if it changes or is taken down. Not sure how a mobile experience would be as I only filter RSS-items on my phone, but no reading.
You can use file sync through a paid subscription or use youe own WebDAV server for it (I will be moving to this). Other than that, it is a database and folder with files, so you can probably use SyncThing or store it directly in Nextcloud also I would think.
I am a folder-person, but it also supports tags so you have flexibility in how you organize.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Epson ET-2815 on Linux - epson-printer-utility not recognizing the printer
1·1 year agoThanks for the suggestion. I tried this, and nothing happened. I think it might only work for the printers with an LCD-display? Mine does not have that (does yours?), and I remember reading somewhere that to do that hardcore cleaning (I can’t recall what they called it), I would need to run it using either Windows or macOS.

1·1 year agoThanks for that! I’m not quite sure what the dummy cartridge is, however, and how I would access it. Would you be able to elaborate on that?

1·1 year agoThanks, I’ll try that if I can’t get anywhere with this. After a long time, now it suddenly seems to detect it upon a random retry after dealing with some other stuff for several hours, although it reports some weird values (e.g. all tanks are empty, when they are about 3/4 full for black and 4/5 full for rest). I’ve managed to start the head cleaner now at least, so we’ll see where that leads.

11·1 year agoThe best and brightest in an area for the pay the companies are willing to pay is not the same as the best and brightest (you are adding a lot of constraints). A lot of times those people will be quite average (or mediocre). By definition, most people are average or close to it. If a company is not willing to pay to attract and retain the actual best and brightest (as many will not), they are left with mediocrity. The companies will often still be able to make a lot of money, because companies in general do not need the best and brightest just to avoid failure and bankruptcy.
Will once innovative companies become worse companies and provide worse services/products? Absolutely. Will they be left behind by better companies who do attract the best and brightest? Sometimes, depending on the industry and the depths of the moats they have built and the number of aligators guarding their monopolies (e.g. regulatory capture and other monopolistic behavior). Will they go bankrupt? Sometimes, but in general it takes more than to just settle into a mediocrity.

I’ve set it up using Docker, following a guide I found on YouTube at the time (it was one of the first thing I set up with Docker). It was really smooth sailing, and it is still running like a champ.
