From what I can tell, it’s likely based on the Christian holiday, Christmas, which is probably a religious version of the Winter solstice. So not totally arbitrary.

I concur on this one. Open a Roth IRA and put it towards an S&P 500 mutual fund with low fees. I use Schwab because it’s free to open an account and deposit money.

LEDs and rechargeable batteries have changed everything. Mine lasts for many hours before it needs to be recharged. And it only takes a little bit to recharge it.

It sounds like they want you to do it during working hours or else they wouldn’t offer those times. It’s a service offered by your job so it could be interpreted as a work-related function and therefore you should get paid for utilizing it.
