8·2 months agoIts fun to think of alternate storage media. The other day I calculated that with the idiotic pricing now, HDDs are only slightly cheaper than DVD storage. And DVDs last longer and dont crash randomly, especially if you get long storage dvds.
Couple years ago, I got three DOA WD red nas HDDs. Dead. And 2 DOA Samsung ssds. I have zero trust for any drive now. No doubt theyre all cost cutting and going to shit. I have 20 year old drives that still work fine.
Ive never personally experienced disc rot even on 20 year old discs, but I heard people have. But yeah DVDs would obviously be a goofy mass backup solution.

I mean, discord gifs work perfectly…and my friends rely HEAVILY it.
Element has no gif keyboard just so you’re aware. Huge dealbreaker.
Oh yeah id never try to circumvent it, thats dumb. Im good friends with all the IT guys and I help them with certain issues sometimes (a lot of them follow the IT rules but arent really tech people if that makes sense)
But if I can have a solution that we just access on our nas via web browser, that’d be fine.

Meanwhile I made a post asking if plex is bad now and most people on it said “no it’s great I paid for my lifetime pass years ago and its been the best!” Yeah, we know the truth now.

I mean for work listening passively I’ve moved to icecast on vlc. There’s a shit ton of internet radio out there and I’ve discovered stuff I never would have otherwise. There’s also the archive. And bandcamp. There’s soooo many ways besides Spotify. Pandora also still exists and I used to like it but I think there’s a lot of ads now
You go!! I’ll keep all my cds, tapes, and records as long as we have players for them!
I have 0 clue how anyone ever figures this stuff out! Geniuses here. I’ll give this a try. The last thing I tried on my nas it ended up freezing and never installed so hopefully this works.
