Don’t even get me started on .NET or the various and sundry “redistributables” constantly required by every tool you try to use.
It’s absurd but Linux is far worse. Instead of addressing library bloat and versioning we have Docker which just throws EVERYTHING into a bag and makes you download an entire OS environment space to run one app.


Thanks but as I said, it’s about the collecting, not the watching. I captured/filtered/converted shows like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command for my nephew 25 years ago. I’m not going to delete it despite that no one is watching it or will watch it for decades (maybe when nephew has kids or if I have grandkids). It’s not even available on any streaming.
I think if I ran maintainerr, it would tell me to delete everything except the home videos that my mother in law likes to watch.


I’ve hosted my own media since before Plex existed. But I understand that almost all of my video is “collection”, not actually useful.
My server was useful for about 5 years when my kids were young and it provided all their shows without ads.

What local model are you using?
I’ll try an analogy to explain better. The firewall is a lock on the door to your house. Vlans are a rule that to go from one room to another, you must go back out the locked door and back in.
So an attacker tries to come in and can’t pick the lock. You are safe.
Another attacker can pick the lock and get into a room. But if they can pick the lock for one room, they can pick the same lock again and get into any other rooms because it’s the same lock protecting every room in the house.

The argument was that the vlans force a device through the firewall so that the firewall can protect it. But for that to happen, like you said the firewall wasn’t strick enough or didn’t have a defense against a 0 day.
So the vlan doesn’t do anything either way. Either the firewall works in which case you don’t need vlans to force local traffic through them a second time or they don’t work in which case again the vlan did nothing.
To compromise a device on a vlan it had to get through the firewall. If your firewall couldn’t stop it then it can attack any other device by going through the firewall because again the firewall didn’t stop the device from being compromised in the first place.

I feel like many setup vlans “because it exists”, not for actual need. The security reason generally doesn’t exist for home labs because most need to setup bridging or you can’t access the devices on the secure vlan at all.


It depends on how old. My Xeons are e-2224G. They’re 14nm coffee lake. They are rated at 71Watts but as I said only use 15w streaming 4k.
They’re $190 on eBay with 16gb ram and 256 GB SSD.
A 16 GB Pi5 is $130 just for the motherboard. You still need storage, case and power supply.


I got an old Lenovo P330 Xeon with 64 G of ECC ram. I recently checked its power usage for another poster asking the same thing. I was shocked to see it only use 15Watts while streaming 4k hevc.
For server use, ECC is important because it’s going to be on 24/7 for years at a time.


If build volume is a limitation, I’ve seen all sorts of snap together plates you could crib from. For example I recently printed this pacman boardgame. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5396911
The interlocks are completely hidden by the overhangs of the other plates. Once snapped together, you can’t see that it is made of separate parts.


How does restore from backup help? I assume a rescan was because new media was added. If you restore from backup, the new media is still there, a rescan happens, and the files again get relabeled wrong.
What’s your budget? I’m a big fan of old Xeon servers.
