To me, Sea Lions are cute and have a tendency in San Francisco to block rich people from their fancy boats by coming en mass to warm themselves on the gangways.
So even though I can’t pet them (it’s illegal and they will fuck a man up) i have nothing but love for sea lions.
I think that is the worst thing trolling has done to internet culture: People will assume that their conversation partner is not arguing in good faith as the standard assumption.

Honestly a lot of people on lemmy legitimately do not know what sea lioning is and use it to mean “you said something that annoyed me.”
i certainly didn’t the first time i got hit with it! and i felt so bad that they felt i was trying to mess with them :( and then they read each apology as further disingenuous snark and it’s all too late to recover

As a side note it always bugs me that the original text of the meme is kind of just weirdly defending racism?
Like clearly in this universe sea lions and maybe even all sea animals are sentient and can speak. The “victim” does a hate crime by saying they could do without that entire race. So yes, sealion bro should not be intruding into this couple’s personal life, but besides that I respect him for trying to do something to change this clearly bigoted man’s behavior and perspective, and it’s noble sealion lad didn’t just punch (slap?) the probably nazi mf in the face the moment he heard his entire community get dissed and told it would be better not existing.
And then in the last panel the man uses the sea lion trying to defend his ethnic community to justify further bigotry!
Anyway. I realize I have invested myself in the race relations of a fictional world. Just be kind on the internet yall.

yeah it’s really weird. Like if someone said something racist/otherwise bigoted i’d try to argue with them too? And pointing out they have no valid sources for their bigotry is an effective tactic that might make them question their beliefs

I swear, 90% of the people in 196 think they’re the only person here who isn’t autistic, genderqueer, or both. It’s a gay bar where half the people in it are straight. I think I may been in a similar situation here? A while back someone posted a screenshot of a twitter post that highlighted how trans people make up a tiny proportion of the population, yet political parties make a disproportionate deal out of them. And I totally agree with the sentiment, but I was interested in how the statistics were worked out. But apparently me asking about that showed that I was trying to distract from the point?
I just wanted to know more really 🤷♂️
