Waiting for the presidential debate feels like waiting for a train to crash. But how bad can it be?

What are your guesses at what will happen? I am curious to compare the answers to what actually happens tonight

biden stammers twice, but otherwise is impeccable.

cnn lobs nothing but softballs to the orange one. still screws 'em up, goes off on tangents, spouts nothing but lies, rages about everything. declared the ‘winner’.

I expect it’ll probably be relatively boring. Trump likely has been coached to hell and back not to say unhinged shit. Of course, he can’t control himself so he’s going to say some unhinged shit, but it’s definitely not going to be to the same frequency and magnitude that he normally is.

Meanwhile, Biden is going to play the “Trump is unhinged, so Republicans please vote for me” strategy, which is going to be unexciting to both Republicans and Democrats.

I think the debate itself is going to be dull, and what will really sway the population is what the media and social media run with afterward. ie, it’ll be determined entirely by who has the more embarrassing slip-up. God this country is fucked

What will probably happen is Trump will say a hundred stupid things no-one bats an eye to. Biden will screw up one soundbite and conservative media will twist and beat that dead horse until it get reincarnated.

The debate site is stormed by fascist militia, most democrats in the building are killed. Trump survives thanks to far right connections and mainstream media plays him up as a profile in courage.

Although I share your sentiment about the US not being the world, this case I think is self explanatory. Myself I am in central Europe with no affiliation to the US but you’d have to live under a rock, if you’ve missed the buildup to this debate

Welcome to my rock, i guess.

I’m vaguely aware that the USA is gearing up for another political tragedy, but who, living outside of the USA, actually follows that stuff? Can’t influence the outcome much either way if you can’t vote, except perhaps by spreading propaganda.

Its frontpage material in all 3 scandinavian media (denmark sweden norway). I imagine most of the world really though. Although the rest of the world has no influence on the result, the result has a huge impact on the rest of the world

Yes, the USA is a master of making itself seem much more powerful and important than it really is, and what do news outlets love more than painting the devil onto the walls? Denmark living in the USA’s pocket doesn’t help much either.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if more Europeans know the presidents of China, Russia, and the USA than know the name of our own European prime minister, which would be pretty sad if actually true.

Of course it’s important to know what other countries are up to, and the EU is currently reliant on the USA for conflict handling (please make a joint European army), but unless you plan to intervene then I see no reason to fanatically follow their politics. Just tell me whether we’ll have to deal with some ancient inept dude, or another ancient inept dude who has managed to weaponize incompetence.

Yeah, I bet most people don’t even know she’s a woman (I assume when you say EU PM, you mean president of the European Commission)

You say you’re not tuned in to any of this yet you’re here talking about it and have presumably read through the comments to know the context. This is like peak redditor energy.

I was going to write a long series of events that grew in oddity and hilariousness until we all died a gruesome death, but that’s a lot of effort, so I’ll just put this here.
