This fan-created game, Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars, features 7 chapters and is currently available for download. The game merges elements from Paper Mario and the Mario and Luigi series into an engaging side-scrolling 2D platformer.
This kept crashing on steamdeck for me. Anyone else have this problem? The launcher opens, but trying to open the game causes it to crash.
This was my experience too. I tried setting up a Bottles container for it as I’ve had success with that approach a few of the times that I can’t get a Proton version to work, but no dice.
I actually wasted a couple of hours trying to get it to work because it looks fun, but I gave up when I realized that I had spent all of that evening’s free time not having fun.
I couldn’t find anyone talking about getting it working on the Deck. If you happen to come across any working instructions, would you please ping me? I’ll do the same for you. Thanks in advance!
Bummer. This is how I’d try to play it since I lack a Windows environment. Thank you for reporting, intrepid explorer.
It says on the site you need WINE so it’s hard to understand why Proton wouldn’t work easily.
Thanks, but I’ve give. Up on it. There are a lot of other games to play.
That’s how I felt about it too
Same deal for me too. I think the software might need to be compiled for linux instead of pushing proton. I also tried wine but no dice.
It’s too bad their docs say they tested it with proton.
I don’t think it’s worth compiling for. Maybe when it’s out of beta it will work fine.
Doesn’t look bad at all, but aren’t Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series RPGs?
Feels weird to use them as examples for inspirations for a platformer.
Feels more like Yoshi’s Island elements thrown into a 2D version of Super Mario 3D World.

Are we both talking about the original game for Nintendo 64? Because that sounds like a bit of an overstatement to me if that’s the case.
Or am I remembering something wrong?

Get it now, before Nintendo finds out about it!
This easily looks like the best original fan made game ever. Good grief what creativity!
Anyone know how to get it setup on a SteamDeck?
