It would make sense to me for them to make some sort of transport//beam relay that works on or parallel to their subspace network, at least eventually.
Maybe eventually, but not when O’Brien was on the Enterprise D. Unless it’s an Enterprise D in the J.J. Trek universe where Scotty found a way to do it. I was going to say that would probably mean O’Brien wouldn’t work there, but somehow in J.J. Trek, everyone ends up in their original jobs anyway. The ship is just much larger and more powerful.
