PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A deadly hit-and-run has shut down an east Phoenix road early Wednesday morning.

Police say around 5:30 a.m., officers and firefighters received reports of an injured woman lying in the road near 28th and Van Buren streets.

Authorities believe a driver struck the woman and fled the scene before officers arrived. She was rushed to the hospital, but later died from her injuries.

Investigators are working to gather information about the suspect’s vehicle. The woman has not yet been identified.

The intersection is expected to be closed for an extended period of time. Drivers should avoid the area or use alternate routes.
