  • IDK why you’re being downvoted, you’re totally right. For this to be closer to a fair comparison, we’d need to know the averages for both countries over the same time period.

    Let’s make the last 40 years our time window. China has dropped zero bombs in that period, making their average zero bombs dropped per day.

    Now for the US, they’ve certainly dropped some bombs in the last 40 years. So that would make their average… Greater than zero bombs dropped per day… Oh…


  • Could you be more specific about the negligible health benefits of coffee and the downsides of caffeine? As a regular coffee drinker, I’ve done some searching to try and gauge the long-term risks of consuming ~100-200mg of caffeine per day, and couldn’t really find anything. The medical sources I’ve seen basically say the long term risk is practically non-existent unless you have a specific sensitivity to caffeine, but I’m curious if you’ve seen something different.




  • What I don’t get is the inaction from the democratic party on changing the voting system between elections.

    1. The Democrats didn’t secure a large enough majority in previous elections to overcome Republican resistance to changing things like FPTP voting or the electoral college.

    2. There is a lot of contention within the Democratic party (at the federal level at least) as it shifts further towards the right in an effort to remain in power. Getting rid of FPTP voting would make it harder for centrist/right leaning Democrats to remain in power.

    Several states have switched to RCV for some of their elections, and progress has been slow, but it’s being made. If you want to see more, elect people that prioritize implementing better voting systems.




  • Carrots often have dirt caked on the outside that’s hard to get off with just water, so peeling is a good way to help with that.

    The peel has the healthy bits

    Sort of, but not really. The nutrients of a carrot may be slightly more concentrated in the skin, but all layers of a carrot contain those nutrients. You’re not depriving yourself of an appreciable amount of nutrients by peeling a carrot.






  • What is it with people trying to turn the entirety of October, November, and December into Christmas?

    It’s one single night, it’s not a season. Is this the Americans trying to push it on us to increase our capitalist consumption or something? I see it a LOT these past few years.

    What’s next, celebrating other holidays in the actual month that they fall in?






  • Yeah I understand storing and using the energy is obviously a better solution than to stop producing the energy. But in the short term, in the context of large solar arrays, until we have storage solutions or ways to use* the excess, covering the panels up or turning them to face the ground for a bit doesn’t seem like a very big logisticical hurdle.

    There are many roof top solar systems on people’s houses. That’s what I’m referring to regarding logistical nightmare.

    Are there really enough residential rooftop panels for this to even be a problem? And couldn’t it be solved just by installing a battery for your home to store the excess? Again, if you could explain how this would be a logistical nightmare for my ignorant self, I’d appreciate it.


  • Right, Skyline is fast food, and should be held to fast food standards. I hate when people call Cincinnati-style-chili “slop” when their only experience with it is the fast-food version though. Like, first of all, duh Skyline is slop, in the same way that Taco Bell beef is slop, and people (myself included) eat that shit up. Because fast food tastes good, even if it’s slop. There wouldn’t be hundreds of Skyline locations, or thousands of Taco Bell locations, all serving up various versions of slop, if that slop doesn’t taste good. And second of all, if people would take 5 minutes to read up on the history of the dish and understand it a bit more, they’d probably understand all the “weird” ingredients and quirks that make it different than The One True 'Merican Texas Style Chili ™️ (which traditionally uses chocolate/cocoa powder as well, by the way). It’s an Americanized version of sauces/dishes commonly eaten in Greek and Macedonian cuisine, which explains why the spice profile is so different. It was first served over hotdogs with mountains of cheese instead of the more-traditional pasta to cater to the American audience. But Cincinnati-style chili is essentially Greek bolognese, and it’s a beautiful, wonderful dish.

    I’m sorry, none of this is directed at you, I’ll get off my soapbox now. I don’t know why I’m so passionate about Cincinnati chili, it just really grinds my gears when people get up on a high horse to look down on some food just because they happen to dislike it.
