We have two doors that go into the garden, one in the dining room one in the kitchen, if we let our rescue Collie out of one she will wait by the other to be let in. Collies are smart, ours is defective.

2·1 year agoPlease be careful, I’ve been told not to push through as it will damage my heart. Currently 3 years in and my stamina for walking or washing up has increased from ~10 mins to ~20 mins, before I get out of breath.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are the best e-mail providers out there?
3·1 year agoI’ve come to the end of my patience with hotmail/live, my email is out there on a list so I get tens of spam mails a day and they almost never correctly identify them, but any new service I sign up to and it goes straight to spam.
Proton mail seems expensive for a single offering and the bundle has too many unnecessary things I don’t need. Also the lack of protocol support means you are restricted on clients you can use.
I’m pleased you posted this as I’m going to give all these a try too, but I’m becoming a pessimist and I’m thinking as soon as I’ve fully switched they will put up the price. Your personal email is becoming one of the hardest things to change.
My top priority is the ability to have individual addresses for each service I use going to a single inbox, that way if my email is leaked by a company, I can just nuke that alias, and I’ll know who leaked it. May be a good feature for you too?
Another unfortunate truth is that the Dildo of Consequence rarely comes lubed.
I was just about to suggest GrayJay but then I remembered it’s an Android app.
Possible but the expense ruined my plans in the end… I did consider collecting broken tungsten end mills and inserts from machine shops and throwing them in molten lead, like croutons in a lead soup.
I really wanted to use Tungsten as the base ballast for a custom narrowboat, for better headroom. Other than the cost you also have the problem of tungsten’s melting point being so high you can’t pour it into a boat hull without melting through.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I can imagine the "will you be using the mobile app?" question to get cheaper food is going to devolve into the Mark of the Beast and someday no one will be able to buy anything without using the apps
3·1 year agoCredit card companies know where you are spending your money, but not what you are buying.
They have been selling your data but it’s less valuable in the world of store apps and online stores where every search and purchase is linked to your email. Still worth opting out of any “data sharing” options your Credit Card company has though.

2·1 year agoIt’s not “a set of people” anymore it’s you, and there is always more data.
Buy some doughnuts for the office… your health insurance just went up.
You buy a new car which has fancy connected features, but now it sells your driving safety score to your car insurance company.
Buy a vegan ready meal, both vegan food companies and the meat industry compete for your business, you might get a few discounts, but your free will is being influenced.

10·1 year agoThe difference is when credit cards were introduced their business model was charging customers interest and businesses fees.
Now the business model is making customer profiles to sell to advertisers, insurance companies and anyone else who is willing to buy the data. I don’t want every business I use to be collecting all this information.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple Leads Smartphone Industry Into Anti-Consumer, Environmental HellEnglish
5·1 year agoThis article is over 2 years old, so not exactly new news.
Just keep your phone for as long as possible and only upgrade when you absolutely have to.
There are no environmentally friendly options, but making sure your device is recycled at EOL, replacing your battery rather than your phone, and keeping it for as long as possible is the best you can do while still having the luxury of owning a phone.
I’m going to get my deposit back for the CT, I still think it’s cool but I don’t think it will ever be sold in Europe and Musk has just ruined the reputation of Tesla. I’m also looking for a home battery and although the Powerwall 3 looks great, I’m going to try and find an alternative, just because of Elon.

Enshittification@lemmy.world•YouTube Premium is getting a big price hike internationally
3·1 year agoI nearly bought premium for the family this year, decided to show everyone how to install breve browser instead, and no issues so far.
The way I look at it is the YouTube Capitalism profit line must go up… the longer we all delay that from happening the better, and if it is expensive in the future I can offset it against my savings today, or subscribe to Nebula, or some other platform if they really take the piss with the price.

News@lemmy.world•Tyreek Hill learned he isn’t allowed to do what white people do
281·1 year agoThe preferential treatment was that the body cams were just muted during the cover up and not all accidentally turned off for the entire encounter, not getting beaten up, tased or shot.
I mean as far as preferential treatment goes I’d take that deal, but the fact remains he was pulled out of his car, roughed up, taken to the floor and handcuffed for 18minutes for no reason when the cop should have been writing him a (dubious) ticket.
There are at least 2 cops here who should not be cops and the rest need to be retrained to ensure they step in if they see mistreatment like this again, for face being fired.

Videos@lemmy.world•New Technology Connections: Door closers: ubiquitous, yet unloved and often maladjusted
0·2 years agoThis guy I swear is looking at my internet search history… The closers most popular around here are the sprung chains in a cylinder hidden in the hinge style. Not sure they have close/latch speed options though. I need to sort out my garage and stairs fire doors, as they are currently always held open by a fire extinguisher (for irony) and a stuffed dog respectively.

Technology@lemmy.world•How to make an EV tire that won’t pollute the environmentEnglish
0·2 years agoWhat kind of backhanded EV misinformation bullshit is this?
Electric, gas, petrol, hydrogen, diesel, cooking oil or vodka; what you put in your car to make it go makes no difference to the tires or the wear.

I can see the point that foldable iPhones are coming, and Apple need practice making packages as thin as possible. If it means the non-pro models get a little thinner then great, as long as the cost of this R&D testing isn’t all loaded on the price of this year’s models, because no one cares about a 1mm difference.
