I am hoping that jellyfin gets better over the next few years. I keep trying it and it keeps feeling broken to me. Lots of people have the same experience it seems but then there’s also always a few people that act like I’m crazy. Nah, it’s still not there, unless things have changed a lot in the past year.

Actually yes, I’ve tried jellyfin like 3 times now. I’m sure I’ll try it again.
I know I’ll be downvoted to oblivion but I’ve never had good luck with jellyfin. Plex has a lot of issues but in terms of just working, it’s been far superior ime.

Every response I read here seems to get it. Yeah, you shouldn’t do risky things without understanding them first. By all means play around with self hosting without knowing anything at first, but do not expose your machine to the Internet without fully understanding the implications and do not complain that self hosting is hard. If you think it is, you just need a bit more education. It’s already incredibly easy these days.
I’m referring to a sentiment I see all over lemmy quite often. I don’t think you get to dismiss all those cases are politely pointing it out. Plenty of other users here notice it too, and point out how counter productive it is. I mean even just the term “liberal” is seen as a proxy for evil here. My guess is that plenty of “liberal” people don’t even conform to the views they are presumed to hold, and plenty of “liberals” are very much on board with most of the same leftist ideas as the ones claiming ideological purity over the liberals. The biggest difference is that some of the purists may know more history than some of the people they hate and claim are the problem.
Fine – spraying hatred on the “liberals” won’t do that though.

Doesn’t sound like you’ve used Facebook in the past ten years or reddit in the past couple. I quit Facebook five years ago and it was a cesspool by then. Reddit is fucking awful now too, I recently saw after the Charlie Kirk killing. I won’t be going back.
I certainly believe them. I have been banned on reddit for some of the mildest shit. If you call out lying scumbag right wingers you will be banned on any corporate social media. If you lie and spread right wing hatred, you will be left alone as long as you stop short of breaking specific rules.

That’s not what this was though, because it eventually fixed itself. I couldn’t begin to diagnose the bug, but the way I have my stuff organized works in jellyfin, but something about it’s scanner and/or database seems to have issues.
I left the scan running for an hour or so, came back and it showed, maybe all, of my shows and seasons. However, on certain views, it would not list episodes that definitely exist. The page looked kind of broken. I thought “okay I’ll give it more time”. An hour or two later, same deal. Cleared browser cache multiple times. Nothing worked. Came back the next day and it was “fixed”. But that experience felt pretty janky.
I listed three things. I didn’t have the patience to suss out what might be wrong with it because Plex required no fiddling and afaik does not have any open security issues.
So you didn’t care, just wanted to downvote. Cool.
Well it’s just generally buggy firstly. Glitchy UI for me especially for hours after I started scanning my media library.
Also it has no built-in system for connecting from somewhere outside your home. You have to manage that yourself.
Then there’s the fact that it’s got lots of security issues.
I appreciate these tips. I’m gonna save this comment for the next time I circle back to Jellyfin.
